What Does it Mean to ‘Support’ Someone?

What does it mean to support someone, especially in the world of politics and to a lesser degree religion, but also in daily life?

I’m serious. You can support a person’s actions, ideas, candidacy, values, and policies. But Jesus never commanded us to support our neighbor as ourself, or to support our enemies. We’re commanded to love both neighbor and enemy in the sense of willing their objective good.

This (love) means to support someone’s good choices and not their bad ones; to support a nation when they stand for justice and not when they do injustice, to support our troops fighting a just war and not when fighting in what is clearly an unjust one, etc.

Love demands upholding the truth, not a false loyalty. As Mother Angelica once said: “Those who tell the truth love you. Those who tell you what you want to hear love themselves.”
