Separating ‘human being’ from ‘person’

When someone offers the foolish “It’s a human but not a person” argument to support abortion – remind them that the three personal characteristics that separate us from other animals are reason, free will (both of which begin to operate at 7, the ‘age of reason’), and self-consciousness (which kicks in at around 3). Inform them that this must mean they’re okay with killing human beings up to 3 years, or seven years, after birth – since they’re not yet ‘persons’.

Then, over their silence, remind them they’re not in good company. Separating ‘human being’ from ‘person’ is what history’s purveyors of genocide have in common.

In truth, all human beings are persons; some of whom are unable to operate their personal powers because of maturity, illness, health issues or deformity
