The above headline is from a Breitbart article (www.breitbart.com/politics/2019/07/15/mitt-romney-trumps-go-back-comments-destructive-has-failed-badly-at-uniting-u-s/).
As a former Romney supporter, it has become clear to me he just doesn’t get it when it comes to uniting the country. Only a person without deep principles would say what he said. Why is this?
First, no president in my lifetime has ever united this country. Secondly, since Bill Clinton introduced the era of secular humanists in power, no president has failed to deeply divide this country – Clinton, Bush, Obama, and now Trump – each has had half the country despise them. There is good reason for this. The culture war is real. The left and right view reality much differently – not only politics, but reality itself. From the time of the founding fathers to when I was growing up, political differences were political. There was no debate about what a male or female was, whether sodomitic relationships should be called marriage, or whether killing one’s offspring was a right. Human nature was pretty much a given and the Judeo-Christian heritage that emphasized freedom and the dignity of the individual was not being threatened.
Then came the sexual revolution brought about by the invention of the pill, It began to blind people to religious truths, and a new practical atheism was born. This new atheism was populated mostly by those who called themselves religious, and most of these were self-proclaimed Christians and Jews. This new atheism rejected God by rejecting His 5th (abortion) and 6th (sexuality) Commandments. They sought to usurp God’s place as source of truth, while giving lip service to the mercy/compassion side of God.
So here we are today. One half of the country is secular progressive, which is a coalition of atheists, liberal Jews and liberal Christians, radical feminists, and ethnic groups dependent on Democratic politicians. The other half of the country includes those who now realize how extreme and crazy this progressive movement is, and seeks to counter its power over society that is now wielded through the media and academia.
Mitt Romney seems to believe politicians can unite us. This is a foolish idea that begun in earnest with JFK’s “Camelot”, and was taken to the extreme with Obama’s Messianic movement. No reasonable person could possibly believe a politician or a political agenda could unite this or any country. Mitt Romney sounds foolish here.
Peace and unity comes only though justice, which itself comes only through truth. “What is truth?” secular progressives today join Pontius Pilate in asking (Jn 18:38). “I am the way, the truth, and the life” said Jesus the Christ (Jn (14:6) who is Truth personified and incarnate. If western society does not come back to this basic tenet of faith that undergirded western civilization, there will be no unity, and eventually no country.
One side of the culture war MUST win. If it is the left, radical Islam is waiting in the wings to fill the spiritual and cultural void. If it is the right, it must regain its roots and be transformed into a nation that values love over money. Until then, stop trying to ‘unite the country’. It will never happen.
