We are at a moment in time when the prospect of designer babies still seems horrid to many people. As genetic engineering gets closer to becoming mainstream, the prospect of designing one’s own babies – their sex, hair color, eye color, body type, etc. – is still met with moral indignation. My bioethics students confirm this for me. Yet, experience shows us, this indignation will not last long.
“Same-sex marriage”, the prospect of killing unborn children, and the use of contraception were all roundly rejected by our society not too long ago. Every Christian denomination in the world before the 1930s rejected contraception as an arrogant attempt to usurp a sacred power belonging only to God. This is also the current argument against creating designer babies – playing God with our selfish desires. This argument used to hold water when our culture still saw the world through a Judeo-Christian lens. We were able to see more accurately the difference between using technology to heal and uplift the dignity of the human person vs. using it for manipulation and dominance of human life.
The truth is it is logically impossible to reject designer babies once you’ve accepted contraception, since the same principle condemns both: the unethical use of technology to manipulate procreation. If we believe we have a moral right to decide who comes into existence (via contraception) or who is born (abortion), what will keep us from believing that we have a right to choose what kind of babies we give birth to?
“But designer babies crosses the line,” you say. You have a short memory. That’s exactly what we said about prenatal murder and unnatural “marriage” before they were foisted on us by the courts and the media, and then accepted by the masses.
Once you’ve decided to usurp the rights of God by accepting contraception, abortion, and homosexuality, do you really think it will be long before we accept the prospect of designer babies and enter this ‘brave new world’? Playing God is exactly what these three previously accepted perversions of nature do. Accepting them effectively makes us enemies of God. We can’t deny this.
There are only two choices on the table for American society: either recognize God as God or continue to ride he bull of logic down the road of manipulative domination of human life. We either repent or we continue to follow the road to self-destruction. In the meantime only those willing to suffer through white or red martyrdom – the death of one’s reputation, livelihood, or worse – will be saved.
Spread the word.
