Is the Spirit Moving from the Bottom Up?

Catholics live in interesting times: Young people are fervently converting to Catholicism while the hierarchy has become weak in faith. It reminds me of the contemporary model of family in which children lead their parents back to the faith. It’s upside-down, but sometimes necessary.

Hell threw the equivalent of a nuclear bomb at the world with the secular and sexual revolutions of the 20th century, and the fallout continues to unfold in fascinating ways. It may take another generation for the sensus fidelium to restore clarity and fervor throughout the clergy, to fully embrace the fullness of truth and grace Christ left the Church in order to sanctify the world.

Until then, laity must be patient and persevering, giving religious and filial respect to bishops and priests without giving in to a ‘Catholic-Lite’ agenda. Bishops are given a particular authority over their flock and the Holy Spirit will never allow the Magisterium to teach faith or morals in error. Whenever someone gives in to bitterness or resentment and stops practicing the fullness of the faith, the devil wins. Ultimately, perseverance in the truth found in the deposit of faith, despite its consequences, is the way to salvation; and it will eventually renew the fervency of faith in the hierarchy throughout the body of Christ.

“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people (laity).”    — Ven. Bp. Fulton J. Sheen
