Christ the King and the Two Thieves at Calgary

Today is the feast of Christ the King; the antithesis of a ‘No-Kings’ rally.
.
At today’s royal banquet (the Eucharist), we reflect on the first time Jesus admitted His Kingship – when, from the throne of His cross and wearing a crown of thorns, He responded to the ‘good thief’s words, “remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus flips authority on its head by showing fallen man that authority must be exercised by the humble to serve the humble (see also Jn 13:5).
.
From another angle, we can see the unravelling of what originally transpired in Eden. The cross of the good thief is grafted onto the new tree of life by its hanging Fruit, Jesus. And the spiritual death of the forbidden tree is symbolized in the arrogance of its hanging fruit, the bad thief.
