Analogies and the Narrowing of the Mind

Studies show students can’t grasp analogies anymore. Analogies enable us to see the interrelations of things and expand our minds to more than just discerning what the senses detect. The narrowing of the mind to just univocal thinking is the result of decades of philosophical materialism and scientific positivism preached through the messages of the media and academia.

Understanding analogy is a sign of being human, requiring creative imagination and intuitive intellect that expands the mind’s scope. Jesus taught in parables full of similes and analogies since the kingdom of God cannot be understood univocally. It transcends sense experience.

The inability to grasp analogies is a sign of being boxed into a narrowly confined intellectual space. Contemplating analogies, on the other hand, enables the human person to apprehend who God is and what He has in store for those who love Him (1 Cor 2:9).
