An ‘Invalid Marriage’ is a Non-Marriage

A man steals a police uniform and acts like a cop, for years, perhaps decades. He performs all the daily duties of a cop and no one (with the exception of God) ever knows the truth: He’s not a policeman. He’s not a ‘partial’ policeman or a ‘different kind’ of policeman. He’s a non-policeman.

So it is with an invalid marriage. A couple may act like spouses and do all the things spouses do; and everyone may think they’re married, but they’re not. In an invalid marriage a real marital bond does not exist. The two do not have a ‘partial’ marriage or a ‘different kind’ of marriage. It is a non-marriage, i.e., objectively a life of fornication, or adultery if at least one party had been married to someone else who’s still alive.

We may fool others. We may even fool ourselves. But God is never fooled.
