Can You Prove That?

x: We must believe only what is proven.
y: Can you prove that?
x: Prove what?
y: That we must believe only what is proven.
x: No, I can’t.
y: Then you believe in what is unproven – the unproven claim that one must believe only what is proven.
x: Um…well…
y: Since you indicate with your claim that it is not possible to believe only what is proven, I guess we should be open to what has not been proven.
x: Ah.. whatever. But you believe in superstition. We should never believe in superstition.
y: We shouldn’t, I agree. But since superstition is a belief in what has been proven false by reason, doesn’t your original claim indicate it is you who believes in superstition?
x: But you believe in things you can’t see – like God, angels and demons.
y: But so do you – like thoughts, ideas, and concepts. We can’t see or touch them, but both of us believe they exist. Since these beliefs are not proven false by reason, they’re not superstitious. However, it is superstitious to believe one must only believe that which is proven. Therefore, it is clear you are projecting yourself onto me.
x: Huh?
y: The bottom line is, in your zeal to avoid superstition you have become superstitious. In your proud attempt to follow reason alone (without faith) you have become unreasonable. Ultimately, in your zealous attempt to avoid the law of God, your thinking has become corrupted. It is impossible to believe only what has been proven; and those who insist on it are simultaneously guilty of violating it.
x: Good day.
