A celebrity woman (whose name doesn’t matter), recently finding out she was pregnant with her fourth child, was quoted in the news as saying,

“As you know, I had been telling [my husband] it was probably time to get a vasectomy because I felt like we were done. But I just feel like God always has other plans. It was extremely shocking and surprising but [we are] happy excited.”

Think about what she said. In two quick sentences she recognizes God’s hand in her pregnancy AND she justifies sterilization, claiming she and her husband were “done”.

To be clear, this woman didn’t say it was a tough time for them due to finances or health reasons and hoped for a temporary reprieve from conceiving another child. Continence on fertile days or Natural Family Planning is legitimate for such emergencies. But the attitude of “we’re done” and the willingness to mutilate their bodies or use artificial drugs or devices to enjoy sexual union while impeding the procreative act from procreating – which is exactly what God designed it to do – is the common attitude of so many couples today. It is an attitude straight from Hell.

This is why it is so important that the whole world become faithful Catholics. That is not an arrogant or elitist statement, but one that recognizes the stakes, temporal and eternal. Secular agnostics, cultural Catholics, and Protestants generally have no problem with mutilating sterilization or contraception to thwart procreation. The sacred authority of the Catholic Church, however, corresponding to right reason, declares that sterilization and contraception are grave evils that violate natural law and are intrinsically immoral. If people have full knowledge and deliberate consent while performing these acts they place themselves in the state of sin (rather than the state of grace), outside of God’s salvific gift of eternal life.

The idea that we, not God, can act as arbiters of the coming into existence of offspring to live this life and an eternity in the next is breathtakingly evil. Yet, almost everyone within the three groups above (secular agnostics, cultural Catholics, and Protestants) hold this attitude, seeing it as ‘normal’ and legitimate to use contraception or get sterilized.

May the light of the Holy Spirit break through to enable us to see that we are not our own, but God’s instruments as mediators of life. When we mutilate or pollute our God-designed bodies to thwart new life, we sin against God’s right to use us to create children to eventually populate Heaven. We must think about this unimaginable injustice. Please pray the veil be lifted from people’s minds that blankets our world today to recognize that human life and the procreative process that brings persons into existence is sacred, and ultimately belongs to God.
